Hit Points Basics

What is the formula for calculating hit points in D&D 5e?

Level 1: Maximum hit die + Constitution modifier (e.g., Fighter d10: 10 + 3 CON = 13 HP).
Levels 2+: Average hit die (rounded up) + CON mod, or rolled (1dX + CON), or manual input.
Our calculator automates this with one click – select class, level, CON, and method.

Average vs Rolled vs Max HP: Which to choose?

Average: Fixed values (balanced, recommended for new players – e.g., d8 = 5).
Rolled: Roll the die (fun but risky – Wizard d6 could be 1!).
Max: Full hit die value (powergaming, great for testing builds).
Pro Tip: Use Average for speed; Max at Level 1 for survival. Toggle in Calculation Method.

Multiclass and Advanced Features

How does multiclass HP calculation work?

Calculate each class separately using its hit die. Example: Barbarian 7 (d12) / Rogue 3 (d8), CON +4:
– Barb L1: 12+4=16
– Barb L2-7: 7+4=11 x6=66
– Rogue L8-10: 5+4=9 x3=27
Total: 109 HP.

How do feats and racial traits add HP?

Tick in Feats & Abilities:
Tough: +2 HP per level (+40 at 20!)
Hill Dwarf: +1 HP per level
Draconic Resilience: Sorcerer AC/HP boost
Auto-applies from Level 1. Best combo: Hill Dwarf Barbarian + Tough = immortal tank.

What are Combat Statistics?

Planning tools:
Avg Hits: Attacks needed to kill you (e.g., 15 dmg/attack = 10 hits for 150 HP).
Danger %: Risk at current HP.
Healing Eff.: % of healing used effectively (80% ideal).
Input enemy dmg/rounds for session prep.

Rules Updates and Compatibility

2024 Player’s Handbook changes to HP?

No core formula changes. New: “Bloodied” condition (half HP or less – some abilities trigger). Calculator unchanged, but use for quick checks.

2026 Epic Boons and HP?

Toggle “2026 Features” for epic bonuses (e.g., Boon of Fortitude: +HP pool). Homebrew varies – confirm with DM.

How accurate is this vs. D&D Beyond?

100% matches official rules (no subscriptions!). Beyond is great for sheets; we excel at instant calcs + combat sims. Both use same math.
