HP Calculator Questions
100% accurate! Our HP Calculator follows the official D&D 5th edition rules precisely. Every calculation is based on the official Player's Handbook and other official D&D materials.
We've tested the calculator extensively against official rules and community feedback to ensure complete accuracy for all classes and levels.
Average HP: Uses the fixed average value for each hit die (e.g., d8 = 4.5, rounded up to 5). This gives you consistent, predictable HP values.
Rolled HP: Simulates rolling the actual hit dice for each level. This gives you the excitement of random HP values just like rolling dice at the table.
Both methods are valid according to D&D 5e rules. Choose based on your preference or your DM's requirements.
You can input your Constitution in two ways:
- Modifier: Enter the actual modifier (e.g., +2, -1, +0)
- Score: Enter your Constitution ability score (e.g., 14, 8, 10)
The calculator will automatically convert between the two formats and apply the correct modifier to your HP calculations.
Our calculator supports several special features that affect HP:
- Tough Feat: Adds 2 HP per level
- Hill Dwarf: Adds 1 HP per level
- Draconic Sorcerer: Adds 1 HP per level (Sorcerer only)
Simply check the appropriate boxes and the calculator will automatically include these bonuses in your total HP.
Character Creation Questions
Our calculator supports all 12 core D&D 5e classes:
- d12 Hit Die: Barbarian
- d10 Hit Die: Fighter, Paladin, Ranger
- d8 Hit Die: Artificer, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Monk, Rogue, Warlock
- d6 Hit Die: Sorcerer, Wizard
Each class uses the correct hit die size according to official D&D 5e rules.
Multiclassing requires manual calculation. Our current calculator is designed for single-class characters.
For multiclass characters, you'll need to:
- Calculate HP for each class separately
- Add the HP from your first level in your first class
- Add HP from subsequent levels in each class
- Apply your Constitution modifier to all levels
We're working on a multiclass calculator for future updates!
Our calculator is designed for official D&D 5e content. For homebrew classes or races with different HP mechanics, you may need to calculate manually or work with your DM.
If you have a popular homebrew class that follows standard HP rules, feel free to contact us - we might add support for it in future updates!
D&D Rules Questions
According to the official D&D 5e rules:
- Level 1: Maximum hit die + Constitution modifier
- Subsequent levels: Either roll hit die + CON mod, or take average + CON mod
- Average values: d6=4, d8=5, d10=6, d12=7 (always round up)
- Minimum HP per level: 1 (even with negative CON modifier)
Our calculator implements all these rules accurately.
Generally, no. Once you've chosen to roll or take average HP for a level, that choice is typically permanent for that character.
However, some DMs allow players to choose their method each level, or may have house rules about this. Always check with your DM about their specific rules for HP calculation.
Most races don't directly affect HP, but some do:
- Hill Dwarf: +1 HP per level (included in our calculator)
- Draconic Sorcerer: +1 HP per level (included in our calculator)
Other racial features might affect Constitution scores, which would indirectly affect your Constitution modifier and thus your HP.
