About D&D 5e Character Sheets

A D&D character sheet is your hero's identity on paper. It's where every ability score, every learned spell, every piece of hard-won equipment, and every scar from battles past is recorded. More than just a stat block, your character sheet tells the story of who your character is โ€” what they can do, what they carry, and what they've experienced. A well-maintained character sheet is the difference between smooth, fast-paced gameplay and frustrating delays while you search for that one modifier you forgot to write down.

Our fillable D&D 5e Character Sheet gives you a clean, organized digital sheet that you can fill out online, save to your browser, and print whenever you need a physical copy. It tracks your ability scores (with automatic modifier calculation), skills with proficiency checkboxes, combat statistics, equipment, spells, and notes. Whether you're creating a new character for a campaign or updating an existing one after leveling up, this tool streamlines the entire process.

๐Ÿ“– What's on a D&D Character Sheet?

A complete character sheet contains:

  • Character Basics: Name, class, level, race, background, alignment
  • Ability Scores: STR, DEX, CON, INT, WIS, CHA (with modifiers)
  • Skills: 18 skills with proficiency indicators and total bonuses
  • Combat Stats: Armor Class, Initiative, Speed, Hit Points
  • Features & Traits: Racial abilities, class features, feats
  • Equipment: Weapons, armor, items, treasure
  • Spells: Known/prepared spells, slots, casting info

๐Ÿ“ How to Fill Out Your Character Sheet

1. Start with Character Basics

Write your character's name, choose your race and class, and note your background and alignment. Your class determines your hit die, proficiencies, and core abilities. Your race adds ability score increases and special traits. Your background provides skills, tools, and roleplaying hooks.

2. Set Your Ability Scores

Use our Point Buy Calculator to distribute 27 points, use the Standard Array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8), or roll 4d6 drop lowest for each ability. Enter your scores above โ€” modifiers are calculated automatically. Your class's primary ability should be your highest score.

3. Mark Skill Proficiencies

Your class, race, and background determine which skills you're proficient in. Check the boxes next to those skills. The sheet automatically adds your proficiency bonus to those skills' total modifiers. Passive Perception = 10 + WIS modifier + proficiency (if proficient in Perception).

4. Calculate Combat Statistics

Armor Class depends on your armor and DEX modifier. Initiative = DEX modifier. Hit Points at Level 1 = max hit die + CON modifier. Use our HP Calculator for higher levels. Proficiency Bonus is +2 at levels 1-4, increasing to +6 at level 17+.

LevelProficiency BonusKey Features
1-4+2Starting features, subclass at level 1-3
5-8+3Extra Attack (martials), 3rd-level spells (casters)
9-12+45th-level spells, major class features
13-16+57th-level spells, powerful abilities
17-20+69th-level spells, capstone abilities

๐Ÿ“ˆ Updating Your Sheet When Leveling Up

Every time you level up, several things on your character sheet change:

  1. Increase your max HP. Roll your hit die + CON modifier (or take the average) and add it to your maximum.
  2. Add new class features. Check your class table for what you gain at your new level โ€” spells, feats, ability score increases.
  3. Update proficiency bonus (if crossing levels 5, 9, 13, or 17).
  4. Update skill modifiers โ€” your proficiency bonus increase affects all proficient skills.
  5. Add new spells if you're a spellcaster. Known casters learn new spells; prepared casters can prepare more.
๐Ÿ’ก Pro Tip: Save multiple versions of your sheet! Save a copy at level 1, another at level 5, etc. This creates a record of your character's growth and makes it easy to revert if needed.

๐Ÿ’ก Character Sheet Tips

  1. Keep it organized. Group items logically โ€” weapons in one section, consumables in another. Update your gold total after every session.
  2. Write down temporary effects. If you have Bless active (+1d4 to attacks), write it somewhere visible so you don't forget to roll it!
  3. Track resources carefully. Spell slots, hit dice, limited-use abilities (Action Surge, Rage, Wild Shape) โ€” track them accurately. Our Spell Slot Tracker helps with spells.
  4. Print a backup. Always have a printed copy or a phone backup. Technology fails โ€” paper doesn't run out of battery.
  5. Use our other tools! This sheet pairs perfectly with our HP Calculator, Point Buy Calculator, Spell Slot Tracker, and Dice Roller.

โ“ Frequently Asked Questions

โ“ Can I save my character and come back later?

Yes! Click the Save to Browser button. Your entire character sheet is saved to your browser's local storage. Even if you close the page or restart your computer, your character will be here when you return (on the same device and browser).

โ“ How do I print my character sheet?

Click the Print Character Sheet button. The print layout automatically hides navigation, buttons, and extra content โ€” only your character sheet prints. Use standard letter or A4 paper for best results.

โ“ Can I use this for multiple characters?

The sheet stores one character at a time. To manage multiple characters, fill out one character, print or screenshot it, then clear the sheet and create the next. Different browsers/devices can store different characters.

โ“ Does this replace the official character sheet?

This is a digital companion tool, not a replacement for the official sheet. It includes core elements but doesn't cover every detail (like inventory weight tracking or death saves). Use it alongside the official sheet for a complete setup.

โ“ How does the auto-modifier calculation work?

Modifiers are calculated as (Score - 10) รท 2, rounded down. A score of 10 gives +0. A score of 16 gives +3. Enter your ability scores in the boxes and modifiers update instantly. Skill modifiers add your proficiency bonus if the skill's checkbox is checked.
