About the D&D 5e Spell Slot System
Managing spell slots is one of the most critical skills for any spellcaster in Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. Unlike martial classes that can swing their sword all day long, spellcasters must carefully ration their magical energy throughout the adventuring day. Running out of spell slots at the wrong moment can turn a routine encounter into a desperate struggle for survival — while hoarding them too carefully means you're not contributing your full potential when the party needs you most.
Our D&D 5e Spell Slot Tracker eliminates the hassle of erasing and rewriting on your character sheet. With a clean, intuitive interface, you can track spell usage for any class at any level. The tracker automatically adjusts to your class's spell slot progression — including special cases like Warlock Pact Magic (which always casts at max level and recovers on short rests). Best of all, your progress is automatically saved to your browser, so you can close the page and come back without losing a single spell slot.
How Spell Slots Work in D&D 5e
In D&D 5e, spell slots represent the limited magical energy a spellcaster can channel before needing to rest. Think of them as magical "ammunition" — each time you cast a spell of 1st level or higher, you expend a spell slot of that spell's level or higher. Cantrips (0-level spells) are the exception — they can be cast at will without using any spell slots, making them your reliable fallback option.
🔮 Key Spell Slot Rules
- Upcasting: You can cast any spell using a higher-level slot than the spell requires. A Magic Missile (1st level) cast with a 3rd-level slot deals extra damage.
- Prepared Spells: Clerics, Druids, Paladins, and Wizards prepare spells daily. You don't assign specific spells to specific slots — you choose what to cast on the fly.
- Spells Known: Bards, Sorcerers, Warlocks, and Rangers learn spells permanently and can cast any spell they know using available slots.
- Ritual Casting: Some spells can be cast as rituals, taking 10 extra minutes but not consuming a spell slot. Wizards, Clerics, Druids, and Bards can ritual cast prepared spells.
Full Caster Spell Slot Progression (Wizard, Cleric, Druid, Bard, Sorcerer)
Full casters receive the most spell slots and unlock higher-level spells the fastest. They gain access to new spell levels every two character levels and max out at 9th-level spells. Here's the complete progression:
| Level | 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | 5th | 6th | 7th | 8th | 9th | Max Spell Level |

Warlock Pact Magic — A Different System
Warlocks break all the rules. Instead of multiple spell slots of different levels, they have a small number of slots that are always the highest level available and recover on a short rest. A 9th-level Warlock has 2 spell slots, both cast at 5th level, and gets them back after every short rest — potentially 6+ high-level casts per day with proper rest management.
| Level | Slots | Slot Level | Mystic Arcanum |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | 1 | 1st | - |
| 2nd | 2 | 1st | - |
| 3rd-4th | 2 | 2nd | - |
| 5th-6th | 2 | 3rd | - |
| 7th-8th | 2 | 4th | - |
| 9th-10th | 2 | 5th | - |
| 11th-16th | 3 | 5th | 6th-8th (one each) |
| 17th-20th | 4 | 5th | 6th-9th (one each) |
Half-Caster & Third-Caster Progression
Paladins and Rangers are half-casters — they gain spell slots at half the rate of full casters and max out at 5th-level spells. Eldritch Knights (Fighter) and Arcane Tricksters (Rogue) are third-casters, progressing even more slowly and capping at 4th-level spells. Despite having fewer slots, their spells complement their martial abilities beautifully.
| Caster Type | Classes | Slot Progression | Max Spell Level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full Caster | Bard, Cleric, Druid, Sorcerer, Wizard | Full table above | 9th |
| Half Caster | Paladin, Ranger, Artificer | 1/2 rate — unlock 2nd at 5th, 3rd at 9th | 5th |
| Third Caster | Eldritch Knight, Arcane Trickster | 1/3 rate — unlock 2nd at 7th, 3rd at 13th | 4th |
| Pact Magic | Warlock | Unique — all slots same level, short rest recovery | 5th (9th via Arcanum) |
💡 Expert Tips for Managing Spell Slots
- Don't blow your highest slots early. Save 3rd+ level slots for when you truly need them — boss fights, emergencies, or encounter-changing moments. Use cantrips and lower-level spells for routine combat.
- Ritual cast whenever possible. If you're a Wizard, Cleric, Druid, or Bard, ritual casting utility spells like Detect Magic and Identify saves slots for combat. Wizards don't even need to prepare ritual spells.
- Short rests are your friend. Warlocks obviously benefit, but Wizards and Land Druids can recover some slots on short rests via Arcane Recovery and Natural Recovery. Always push for short rests!
- Consider slot efficiency. Spells like Spiritual Weapon (bonus action attack for 1 minute, no concentration) and Hex (lasts hours when upcast) give massive value per slot.
- Upcast strategically. Some spells scale beautifully with higher slots (Fireball +1d6 per level, Hold Person targets more creatures). Others barely scale at all (Shield — always 1st level). Know which spells benefit most from upcasting.
- Track with our tool during sessions. Keep this page open on your phone or tablet. The auto-save feature means you'll never lose your slot tracking between sessions — even if you close the browser.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
❓ How many spell slots does a 5th-level Wizard have?
A 5th-level Wizard has 4 first-level slots, 3 second-level slots, and 2 third-level slots — 9 total. They can also recover up to 3 levels worth of slots on a short rest via Arcane Recovery.
❓ Do Warlocks get their slots back on a short rest?
Yes! Warlocks recover all their Pact Magic spell slots on a short rest (or long rest). This is their defining feature. With 2 short rests per day, a Warlock effectively triples their spell output.
❓ Can I cast a 1st-level spell using a 3rd-level slot?
Absolutely. This is called upcasting. Many spells gain extra benefits when cast with higher-level slots — Cure Wounds heals +1d8 per level, Magic Missile creates +1 dart per level. Some spells (like Shield) don't scale but can still be cast with higher slots if you're out of lower ones.
❓ What happens when I run out of spell slots?
You can still cast cantrips at will. All spellcasters have access to damage-dealing cantrips that scale with character level. A 17th-level Wizard's Fire Bolt deals 4d10 fire damage — not bad for a free spell! You can also use non-magical actions like Dodge, Dash, Help, or use items.
❓ Do Paladins and Rangers get cantrips?
By default, no. Paladins and Rangers don't learn cantrips unless they take a fighting style (Blessed Warrior or Druidic Warrior from Tasha's Cauldron) or multiclass into a class that grants cantrips.
❓ Does this tracker save my progress?
Yes! Our spell slot tracker uses your browser's local storage to automatically save your class, level, and slot usage. You can close the page and come back — everything will be exactly as you left it.
