Pokémon GO CP Explained: IVs, Levels & Power-Up Guide (2026)

📅 Updated: May 2026 ⏱️ 8 min read 👤 By D&D HP Calculator Team

Every Pokémon GO trainer has asked the same question: "Should I power this up, or wait for a better one?" The answer lies in understanding three interconnected systems: Combat Power (CP), Individual Values (IVs), and Pokémon Levels. These hidden mechanics determine whether your Charizard is a raid-crushing monster or a resource-wasting disappointment.

This guide breaks down everything — from the mathematical CP formula to the counterintuitive truth about PvP IVs. After reading, you'll know exactly which Pokémon are worth your hard-earned Stardust.

The CP Formula — How Combat Power Is Calculated

CP isn't a random number. It's the result of a precise formula that combines your Pokémon's base stats, IVs, and level:

CP = Floor(Attack × √Defense × √HP ÷ 10)

Where:

  • Attack = (Base ATK + ATK IV) × CP Multiplier
  • Defense = (Base DEF + DEF IV) × CP Multiplier
  • HP = (Base HP + HP IV) × CP Multiplier
  • CP Multiplier (CPM) is a value between 0.094 (Level 1) and 0.840 (Level 50) that scales with Pokémon level

Key Insight: Because Attack is not square-rooted in the formula (unlike Defense and HP), a high Attack IV contributes significantly more to CP than high Defense or HP IVs. This is why perfect 15/15/15 IVs aren't always optimal for PvP (more on this later).

IVs Explained — Individual Values & Appraisal

IVs (Individual Values) are hidden stats ranging from 0 to 15 for each of the three stats: Attack, Defense, and HP. Think of IVs as a Pokémon's genetic potential — two Mewtwos at the same level can have different CP because of IV differences.

Pokémon Levels & the CP Multiplier

Every Pokémon has a hidden level from 1 to 50. The level determines the CP Multiplier (CPM) used in the CP formula. Higher level = higher CPM = higher CP.

How to estimate your Pokémon's level: Look at the white arc behind your Pokémon. The dot's position indicates the level relative to your trainer level cap. The Stardust cost to power up also indicates the level range.

PvP IVs — Why 0/15/15 Can Beat 15/15/15

Here's the most counterintuitive truth in Pokémon GO: For Great League (1500 CP cap) and Ultra League (2500 CP cap), perfect 15/15/15 IVs are often WORSE than low Attack IVs.

Why? Because Attack is weighted more heavily in the CP formula, a Pokémon with 0 ATK / 15 DEF / 15 HP can reach a higher level while staying under the CP cap — resulting in higher total stat product than a 15/15/15 version at a lower level.

🏆 PvP Golden Rule: For Great League and Ultra League, look for Pokémon with low Attack IV (0–5) and high Defense/HP IV (12–15). For Master League (no CP cap), 15/15/15 is always optimal.

Stardust & Candy Power-Up Costs

Powering up from Level 1 to Level 50 costs approximately 500,000 Stardust and 296 Candy XL (plus regular candy). This is why choosing the right Pokémon to invest in is critical — you cannot afford to waste resources on low-IV specimens.

⚠️ Stardust Warning: Never power up a Pokémon until you need it for a specific raid, Gym battle, or PvP league. Stardust is the scarcest resource in the game. A "maybe useful someday" power-up is almost always a mistake.

Pro Tips for Powering Up Pokémon

  1. Check IVs before investing. Use the Appraisal feature or our CP Calculator. Never power up a Pokémon without knowing its IVs.
  2. Weather Boost saves resources. Weather-boosted Pokémon are caught at Level 25 instead of Level 20 — saving 28,000 Stardust and 28 Candy in power-ups to Level 30.
  3. Lucky Pokémon cost 50% less Stardust. Always try to trade for Lucky versions of Pokémon you plan to max out.
  4. Shadow Pokémon deal 20% more damage. Even a 0% IV Shadow Pokémon outperforms a 100% IV regular Pokémon in raids. Don't purify your good Shadows!
  5. Power up in stages. Bring raid counters to Level 30 first (cheap). Only push to Level 40-50 for Master League or when you're swimming in Stardust.

FAQs About Pokémon GO CP & IVs

Q: What's the difference between CP and IV?

CP (Combat Power) is the visible number representing overall battle strength. IVs (Individual Values) are hidden stats (0–15) that contribute to CP. Two Pokémon at the same level can have different CP because of IV differences.

Q: Should I power up a Pokémon with 14/14/14 IVs?

Yes, for raids. A 93% IV Pokémon performs nearly identically to a 100% in raids — the difference is less than 1% in actual combat. For Master League PvP, the missing 1 HP or 1 DEF can lose mirror matches, so 100% is preferred.

Q: How do I know my Pokémon's exact level?

Use third-party apps like Calcy IV (Android) or Poke Genie (iOS). These scan screenshots and give exact level, IVs, and PvP rankings. Or estimate using the Stardust cost table above.

Q: Can I increase IVs?

No. IVs are permanent when a Pokémon is caught or hatched. The only exceptions: Trading re-rolls IVs (but they can go down), and Purifying a Shadow Pokémon adds +2 to each IV (max 15).

Q: What's better for raids — high CP or high IV?

High CP wins. A Level 35 Pokémon with mediocre IVs will outperform a Level 20 perfect IV Pokémon in raids. IVs matter most when you're deciding which Pokémon to invest Stardust in for the long term.
