About the D&D 5e Spell Slot System

Managing spell slots is one of the most critical skills for any spellcaster in Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. Unlike martial classes that can swing their sword all day, spellcasters must carefully ration their magical energy throughout the adventuring day. Running out of spell slots at the wrong moment can turn a routine encounter into a desperate struggle for survival.

Our D&D Spell Slot Tracker eliminates the hassle of erasing and rewriting on your character sheet. Track spell usage for any class at any level. The tracker automatically adjusts to your class's spell slot progression — including special cases like Warlock Pact Magic (which always casts at max level and recovers on short rests). Your progress is automatically saved to your browser.

🔮 Key Spell Slot Rules

  • Upcasting: Cast any spell using a higher-level slot than required.
  • Prepared Spells: Clerics, Druids, Paladins, and Wizards prepare spells daily.
  • Spells Known: Bards, Sorcerers, Warlocks, and Rangers learn spells permanently.
  • Ritual Casting: Some spells can be cast as rituals without consuming a spell slot.

Warlock Pact Magic — A Different System

Warlocks have a small number of slots that are always the highest level available and recover on a short rest. At 9th level, a Warlock has 2 spell slots — both cast at 5th level — and potentially 6+ high-level casts per day with proper rest management.

🔄 Short Rest Recovery: Warlocks recover ALL Pact Magic slots on a short rest. Use the "Short Rest" button above to instantly recover Warlock slots.

💡 Expert Tips for Managing Spell Slots

  1. Don't blow your highest slots early. Save 3rd+ level slots for boss fights or emergencies.
  2. Ritual cast whenever possible. Wizards, Clerics, Druids, and Bards can ritual cast utility spells without spending slots.
  3. Short rests are your friend. Warlocks obviously benefit, but Wizards and Land Druids can recover slots on short rests via Arcane Recovery and Natural Recovery.
  4. Upcast strategically. Some spells scale beautifully with higher slots (Fireball +1d6/level). Others barely scale (Shield). Know which spells benefit most.
